We assist with the system of guidelines or agreements that control the actions of a certain group of individuals working toward a particular goal. Various examples include a producers' association (an arrangement among farmers, maybe to collectively purchase inputs or supply output to clients), a contract (such as merely to exchange commodities, or a sharecropping agreement between landlord and tenant farmer), and so on. Thus, agreements to exchange or coordinate products or services (like labor) are referred to as institutional arrangements. The process of reaching a conclusion and implementing these agreements requires the use of resources, also known as transaction costs, which are covered in greater detail in the section that follows.
